Disaster recovery
R otarians can identify disaster preparedness and recovery projects to support through ProjectLINK . Contributions to projects listed on ProjecLINK can be sent through Rotary International Headquarters or the International Service Offices.
To provide the most effective, efficient, and immediate relief to disaster victims, Rotarians are encouraged to work with well-established international relief agencies, such as UNICEF , the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies , and Doctors Without Borders . Or Rotarians can work with Rotary club or district relief initiatives, such as ShelterBox , World Water Works , Aquabox , and LifeBox . If your club would like to identify organizations to work with on their disaster relief and recovery project consult the Disaster Relief and Recovery Organizations List .

WHAT EXACTLY IS POLIO?
- A crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease, polio (poliomyelitis) still strikes children mainly under the age of five in countries in Asia, Africa, and the eastern Mediterranean.
- Polio can cause paralysis and sometimes death. Because there is no cure for polio, the best protection is prevention. For as little as US$0.60 worth of vaccine, a child can be protected against this crippling disease for life.
- It can cause paralysis within hours, and polio paralysis is almost always irreversible.
- In the most severe cases, polio attacks the motor neurons of the brain stem, causing breathing difficulty or even death.
- Historically, polio has been the world’s greatest cause of disability.
If polio isn’t eradicated, the world will continue to live under the threat of the disease. More than 10 million children will be paralyzed in the next 40 years if the world fails to capitalize on its US$5 billion global investment in eradication.

More than 100 Russian Rotarians visited the RI Convention, Bangkok, having an excellent information booth and giving a big Russian party there. Russian Rotarians truly deserve to be masters of their own destinies, in their own language and culture. That’s why it is a great fortune for Rotary International that besides District 2220 (West Russia), west from the Ural heights, the new District 2225 (East Russia), east from Urals, will be founded in middle of June and the first District Conference will be held in Omsk, Siberia on June 21-24, 2012.
D2220 was founded in 2005 when it started as an independent district. The first Rotary Club in Russia was chartered in Moscow in 1990. In the district 2220 is now 53 clubs with 965 Rotarians. New D2225 will have 28 Rotary Clubs and 492 Rotarians in the beginning. Both have many excellent service programs in their clubs! Good luck and many thanks!
